Garage Door Installation Process

Experienced Installations can make the difference between a long lasting garage door and a problem.

HOW-TO-MEASURE FOR A NEW RESIDENTIAL GARAGE DOOR Use the drawing and instructions to measure the existing garage door. Take these measurements to Canadoor to purchase the Clopay® garage door that is right.

Step 1Step 2Step 3Step 4
Measure the width and height (1 and 2) of your door opening in feet and inches to determine the garage door size you need. The rough opening should be the same size as the door.Measure area labeled side room left and right (3 and 4) - a minimum 3-3/4" is required on each side for installation of the vertical track for a standard torsion spring system.Measure area labeled headroom (5), which is the distance between the top of the door opening (jamb header) and the ceiling (or floor joist). 12" is necessary for a standard torsion spring system. If the headroom is restricted, specialized hardware is available. We require an additional headroom for the installation of an automatic garage door opener. NOTE: If the garage door height extends above the opening, the headroom measurement should be adjusted proportionately. Measure area labeled backroom (6) – measure the distance from the garage door opening toward the back wall of the garage. Door height plus 18" is required. Additional backroom may be necessary for automatic garage door opener installation.
