Is your garage door not opening properly, making strange noises, or looking grimey? If so, we have some helpful garage door maintenance tips for you to help your garage door function well and look its best.

Perform An Inspection

We recommend spending some time taking a good, hard look at your doors and checking every aspect. This includes:

1. Looking for wear and tear, rust, or deterioration on the springs, cables, rollers, and pulleys.

Expert Tip: Do not attempt to remove, adjust, or repair these parts or anything attached to them. These parts are under high tension and should only be fixed by a trained garage door professional.

2. Making sure your door opener’s automatic reversal works.

Expert Tip: Test the reversing mechanism by placing a wooden board or other object in the path of the door. If the door doesn’t reverse after it touches your object, contact us for a repair. If your door has a sensor, wave an object in the path of the sensor beam. Again, if the door doesn’t reverse, give us a call.

3. Making sure that your manual release is operating.

Expert Tip: The handle should be easily accessible and no more than 6’ above your garage floor.

4. Making sure that the door stays on its track when operating and that it can stay open in a fully open position and half open position.

Expert Tip: How to check the door positions: With the door fully closed, pull the manual release rope to disconnect the door from the operator. Manually lift the door to the fully open position, then lower to the halfway open position, and then close the door. The door should stay in place without your help.

Regular inspections and preventative maintenance is definitely recommended. If this is more time than you have available, give our team a call and we’ll send a technician to your home to assess the state of your garage doors and conduct maintenance or repairs, as needed.
