How Do I Know if I Need a Garage Door Replacement?

Several signs point to replacement rather than repair. If your door is constantly breaking down and requiring frequent garage door repair calls that are adding up in cost, or if the damage is structural, such as a bent frame or panels that can no longer be matched, replacement is the more practical solution. Age is also a factor; doors that are 15 to 25 years old may no longer meet current safety and insulation standards for Ontario homes and commercial properties.

Beyond function, curb appeal and energy efficiency are strong reasons to replace. A worn or outdated door can undermine the look of an otherwise well-maintained property and allow draughts that drive up heating costs year-round. Our Door Imagination System lets homeowners upload a photo of their home and preview different styles, colours, and configurations before committing to a replacement.

Signs You May Need a Garage Door Replacement

The door has sustained structural damage such as a bent frame or warped sections

Panels are no longer available in a matching style, colour, or profile

The door requires frequent repairs and costs continue to escalate over time

Visible rust, rot, or corrosion is affecting the door's integrity or appearance

The door no longer insulates properly, allowing draughts or cold air into the garage

The system is 15 or more years old and no longer meets current safety standards

Measuring For Your Residential Garage Door Installation

For a no-obligation quote, please provide measurements for your residential garage door. Using the steps below, we can determine the size of the door you will need.

measuring for your installation
Step 1

Measure the Width (1) and Height (2) of your door opening in feet and inches.

The rough opening should be the same size as the door.

Step 2

Measure the area labelled Left Side (3) and Right Side (4). For the installation of a standard torsion spring system, a minimum of 3-3/4” is required on each side of the vertical track.

Step 3

Measure the area labelled Headroom (5).

This is the distance between the top of the door opening and the ceiling. 12″ is necessary for a standard torsion spring system.

If the headroom is restricted, specialized hardware is available. We require additional headroom for the installation of an automatic garage door opener.

Please Note: If the garage door height extends above the opening, the headroom measurement should be adjusted proportionately.

Step 4

Measure the area labelled Backroom (6). This is the distance from the garage door opening to the back wall of the garage. Door height must be 18″ or more.

Please Note: Additional backroom may be necessary for the installation of an automatic garage door opener.

Step 5

Send Canadoor your garage door measurements for your no-obligation quote. A member of our team will be in touch within one business day.

Commercial Garage Door Replacement

If your garage door needs constant repairs, replacing the whole system can save you money on repairs, parts, and energy costs long-term. Many buildings end up fitted with the wrong door type, like a standard sectional door in a high-traffic condominium parking garage that fails within a year, which is why proper product selection matters.

Our team sends a lead technician to assess your business first, evaluating cycle count, weight, and safety devices before recommending a product. This ensures you get a door built to actually last in your specific application.

Replacement doors are available in carriage, farmhouse, contemporary, traditional, modern wood, and modern steel styles, in a wide range of materials, colours, and insulation configurations.

Start with your home’s architecture and exterior finish, then consider insulation, maintenance needs, and budget. Our Door Imagination System lets you upload a photo of your home and preview different door styles and colours before deciding.
